Heathfield,Sussex, New Waitrose Store, King Post Wall

At the site of a former car showroom Waitrose were developing a small new store. The engineering challenges were significant as the site was underlain by a significant thickness of made ground and the store was to cut in to a slope. On the slope ran a minor road which had to be retained whilst the store was built. The compact nature of the site meant that the roadway had to be retained along the line of the store and a King Post wall was ideal for this. Engineer's GDP developed a scheme in conjunction with Keller to support the steel frame of the building on the King Post wall beams by welding plates on the top of the wall steels.

Thereafter the site could be cut to the underside of the floor slab and vibroreplacement undertaken to depths of 4.5m  to support the floor and remaining foundations.

Careful analysis was undertaken to ensure that the differential settlement between those bases supported by vibro and those founded on the steelwork of the King Post wall was within acceptable limits.

Elsewhere on this steep site a Phi timber crib wall was installed to retain the car park. The work was carried out on time and to budget and by Keller UK undertaking all elements the Client had a one stop solution.
