Vibro stone columns were the obvious choice here to facilitate the adoption of simple spread footings and ground bearing slabs on a Brownfield site. They were also able to be installed close to an existing retaining wall with no issues.

Installing vibro stone columns at Burslem

The project

The construction of a new Lidl food store regenerating a brownfield plot that had been vacant for more than 10 years.

The challenge

To provide a VSC solution through loose deep fills whilst ensuring that the vibration impacts were monitored and carefully controlled.

The solution

VSCs were selected to provide a bearing capacity of up to 150kN/m2.  Keller used fully instrumented depth vibratory equipment which could achieve genuine compaction of the existing loose soils, while closely monitoring the depths and vibration impact of the installation works using real time technology. The proposed solution offered our client significant time and carbon savings over the original piled option.
