Keller delivered a low carbon scheme using rigid inclusions and Mixed Modulus Columns (CMM®) avoiding options which would have meant using more concrete.

The project

A large retail development on the edge of the Lincolnshire coastal town of Mablethorpe.

The challenge

Provide a solution that could enhance the bearing capacity and settlement performance of a significant thickness of very weak soils, so as to avoid the cost and legacy associated with piling and fully suspended construction.

The solution

Keller installed a combination of RIs and CMMs across the entire site to provide a sustainable solution for two retail units, a petrol station, external yards, roads, car parks, services, and a noise bund.  RIs were selected to provide direct support for foundations to achieve 125kN/m2 and they were used in conjunction with a 400mm thick Load Transfer Platform (LTP), to facilitate the construction of ground bearing floor slabs and concrete yards.  CMMs were selected for all flexible surfacings to reduce punching and allow new services to be easily routed through the treated area. The works were monitored on a daily basis using Keller’s fully instrumented technology, to ensure that all of the columns were constructed to the highest standards.
